Although people are not sure where the name t-shirt came from, it is generally believed that they were named because of their shape. The general t-shirt design looks similar to a T when the shirt is laid out, with the sleeves stretched outwards. Some people also believe t-shirts actually got their name as an abbreviation for "training shirts," which is how they are used in the Army.
The theory that t-shirts got their name from their shape is probably the most plausible, though, because the tank top designs that came about in the 1930s were originally known as a-shirts. Some people have even theorized, however, that t-shirt is actually short for amputee-shirt, because of their shortened arms. It is somewhat hard to believe, though, that people would look at the t-shirt design and name it after a person who is missing their arms and/or legs.
Now there are many different types of t-shirts to choose from in all shapes, sizes, materials and designs. The popular ring-neck t-shirt design became popular in the 1950s and 1960s, but the v-neck and wide-neck t-shirts are also popular today. And while the original t-shirt was made from cotton, there are t-shirts made from many different types of materials today. They are also embellished with various decorations, embroidery, catchphrases, images and other adornments.
